My name is Keith. I’m a "preacher’s kid." I was born in Georgia while my parents were attending Mercer University. Before I could remember living there, we moved to Hartwell, Georgia. After my sister was born we moved to Hiawassee, Georgia, where my Dad was pastor of a Baptist church.
In April, 1960, our church was having a revival. On Tuesday afternoon, I was playing out in the yard between the church house and the pastorium. I began thinking about spiritual things. I realized that there were things I had done that were wrong in God’s eyes, not just because my parents said so.
Right then and there, next to a couple of big oak tree stumps, I asked Jesus to save me and He did. That evening, I made a public profession of faith (despite having lost a tooth during the ’singing’ time of the revival!) I was baptized at another Baptist church, since our church didn’t have an indoor baptistery at the time, and a sudden cold snap precluded being baptized in Lake Chatuge.
Later that summer, we moved to another First Baptist Church in Georgia, which I consider my home church. I once earned a 10-year perfect attendance pin in Sunday School there. We had a great youth group, from which have come a pastor’s wife, an IMB missionary, two fulltime Music Ministers, a pastor, a part-time Music Minister, and me. I have served several different church staffs, most often as senior pastor (20 years all together) but also in various other staff positions.
My wife is presently serving as church pianist at a Baptist church near our home. She is a 5th grade schoolteacher and recently completed her Masters’ degree in Educational Leadership. We have three adult sons.
We are blessed that all our family are committed Christians. |
